Applied Math -Decimals Party

Hi Mathematicians,

To celebrate finishing a long unit on decimals, we are going to have a party! I'm sorry I can't be with you today, but I need you to get started for me.

First, get with a partner or two.

1. Your budget is $30 at Antrim Market.

2. There should be no nuts or nut products in the food or drinks. Also, no peas or peapods.

3.You need to choose items that fit our school wellness policy.

We will be voting on the best party proposal, and we will be buying the winning group's choices!

It is going to be an awesome Fall, with the very capable Mrs. Beaudin ( formerly known as Miss Blanchette) taking the reins while Ms. Cullinan enjoys some bonding time with her new son.

Brennan Kent Schaub arrived July 1st, and clocked in at 9 lbs. and 11 oz. Ms. C will be out on maternity leave until after Thanksgiving.

Luckily, we don't have to wait that long for ELP! The new applications are out and due back on the 14th for 6th, 7th and 8th graders.

Costume Design, Egyptian Mythology, Improv & Public Speaking, Lego Robotics and Griffins' Nest are available this Fall semester.

Dear ELP Families,

We've had a great year in ELP filled with lots of hands on learning and great successes! I appreciate all of your support and your students' enthusiasm.

ELP will be wrapping up slightly early this year, due to my upcoming maternity leave. The last day of ELP classes is officially June 10^th, with some classes finishing earlier in that week.

My maternity leave will extend through the Fall, and I will return after Thanksgiving. While I am gone, there will be a substitute who will be starting the year off, so that it begins smoothly.

It has been a fun year with all of the students. We still have some great work ahead before June 10^th, but if I do not see you to tell you in person, have a great summer. I will look forward to seeing all of you in the Fall!

GBS Recycled Fashion Show a Hit!

Here are pictures from our 1st ever Recycled, Repurposed and Reused Fashion Show! It featured designs from our Costume Design Class. It was FABULOUS!

A tie skirt and repurposed t-shirt top.

A red dress of recycled paws, a green dress of repurposed grain bags and a shirt of reused ribbons, buttons and fabric.

Reused carpet foam, duct tape and grain bags.

Various reused lace curtains and netting make this ensemble.

A feed bag makes this dress.

Recycled paper from the trash makes a splash!

This ensemble is all recycled clothing.

This was put together from many water bottles and duct tape.

On the left, a party ensemble from a reused pair of jeans and a lace curtain.

The jumper is from pellet stove bags.

Recycled tshirt, lace curtain and carpet foam make this white dress.

Trashbags and sheets were sewn together to create the stripes on this look.

We are going to see two silent movies as a whole ELP group on Thursday.

That means over 115 students are invited!

We are going to see Sherlock, Jr. and One Week , two famous Buster Keaton comedies.

We have lots of upcoming events this spring in ELP...

The spring play The Making of Mad Medusa, is performing during school hours on April 14th and in the evening on April 15th. Come check it out, it's free! and it features the work of the costume designers, props and set crew, script writers, and of course the fabulous cast and crew!

May 19th, Jeff Rapsis, our favorite silent movie buff and piano player is coming to accompany a trio of silent movies as a celebration for a year of great work in ELP.

May 21st, the improv group is performing at Children and the Arts Day. So, check it out if you are in Peterborough!

TBA in late May is the improv evening show and perhaps a trash fashionshow by the costume designers.

May 27th is a contra dance during the day for the Griffins' Nest.

Wow! We certainly have a lot going on! Stay tuned!

This past week, we celebrated Pi Day, which is on March 14th.

We ate Pi-pie, and learned about the area and circumference of circles.

Congrats to Jesse Whicker, who won first dibs on all the pie, by memorizing 41 digits!

1. What is the mathematical definition of a reflection?
2. To show me that you can reflect over the x and y axis. So be ready!

Next, read this site and do the activities HERE

Third, write out the letters in my last name ... CULLINAN... on a piece of paper. Make sure to use capitals with block lettering. How many of them have a vertical (up and down) line of reflection? How many have a horizontal (back and forth) line of reflection?

Now, take the letters in your last name. Do the same thing. TURN IT IN TO THE INBOX.

We recently met a very cool storyteller named Len Cabral, who taught us all about storytelling and engaging our audience. You can see his website HERE.

Students in Improv and Public Speaking practiced their own takes on famous stories and we went next door to AES to share them with students. We hope to keep going and do more storytelling with our across the parking lot neighbors!

Flip Vid Movie Making

Prop and Set Design will be for students who like to work with wood and create 3D projects. Their creations will feature in our spring play in April!

Flip Vid movie makers will creat short videos of their own, and work together to make a welcome video for the upcoming 5th graders. We may also make music videos or other projects.

Applications are going to be out soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Class Updates

Things are cooking here at GBS. We have lots of classes in full swing!

Greek Mythology has learned about all the 12 major god and goddesses, and is getting ready for an in-class competition to test our knowledge. Then, we'll be making up some Wanted Posters for the villains and monsters of Ancient Greece!

Some of the Greek Mythology students are coming together at lunch time to do an informal book group. They are reading Goddess of Yesterday by Caroline B. Cooney. Here's a link to a summary of the book. So far, it's getting rave reviews.

In Costume Design, we are working on designing across the decades. Students are learning how to read scripts for character, time period and other clues about costuming.

Other students are following patterns to create purses. They are learning how important it is to follow directions carefully!

Improv and Public Speaking has been doing very well. We have a large number of students in the class, beginners as well as veterans from last year. We have recently moved into more complex games, such as one of our favorites, The Dating Game! where improvers don't usually find true love, but they do get some laughs.

The scriptwriters are furiously working on the script for the spring play. It is totally different than last year's creation. This year's play focuses on a motley crew of middle schoolers who are determined to save their play from rediculous directors, misinformation and themselves! It promises to be really wonderful!

The Lego Robotics class is moving along, with everyone working at their own pace. Students are transitioning into making increasingly complex creations out of Legos. Recently, students have been making street sweepers, fishing rods and hotrods, as well as simple machines.

Our Griffins' Nest program has grown by leaps and bounds since last year, with 46 buddy pairs meeting weekly. We have been getting to know each other this fall. Our GBS buddies have additionally been learning about communication skills to help draw their buddies out of their shells!

Here are a few recent snapshots....

In Advanced Costume Design, students have researched, planned and created their own costumes, to review the basics of costume design and create something in time for Halloween. This student chose to research and create a Greek Goddess.

Lego Robotics is in full swing, with students working at their own pace to learn the basic principles of simple machines through Lego creations. These students are investigating the use of pulleys when lifting a load.

The Griffins' Nest has grown and grown! There are so many wonderful buddy pairs this year. One recent activity was to decorate a gourd creation with your buddy and exchange gourds. It is wonderful to see the budding friendships between the middle schoolers and the elementary schoolers.

Our other ELP classes are also doing great work. Look for more updates, soon!

Costume Design and Advanced Costume Design

In this class, students learn to design and create costumes.

No previous sewing experience required!

Returning costume designers will learning more about fashion design

and using patterns. Later in the year we will costume a play and put on a fashion show. Here's a link to some costume designers at work.

Magazine

Students create and publish The Bobcat's Meow, our student run online magazine.

Script Writing

The script writers work collaboratively to create a play that will be performed by the GBS Drama Club in the Spring! This is a 1/2 year course.

Improv and Public Speaking

Recycled Talent, our GBS improv team, creates and performs the announcements every day.

Griffins' Nest

This is our AES/GBS collaboration, in which GBS students partner with an AES student to play games, provide rolemodeling and learn about leadership and communication skills.Check it out here and here!

If you have a passion about something, and want to learn about it, Independent Study is for you!

You can choose to learn about anything you are interested in. Ms. C will help you get resources, and come up with an end product showing what you have learned.

Lego Robotics

The site is for Lego Mindstorms, but we'll be using Lego Robolab software to program our robots, as it is requires more planning and learning.

Griffin's Nest, Recycled Talent and Flip Video in the GBS Variety Show!

This Friday, three ELP classes will be featured in the GBS Variety Show.

1st, 2nd and 3rd graders from AES, and their GBS buddies, will perform a Buddy Circus Act to the song Hot Butter Popcorn. It promises to be a spectacular spectacle!

The improv group Recycled Talent! will do two quick games-- Park Bench and The Dating Game, to show off some of our comedy talents.

Flip Video class is going to be debuting a music video performed and created by students.

The Variety Show starts at 1:20 on 6/11/10 here at the GBS gym. Please come and check it out!

Silent Movies for ELP

We had so much fun seeing three silent movies at the Antrim Town Hall this past Monday.

We saw Cops, Moony Mariner and Lizzies of the Field. Almost all of the 90 ELP students were there, and a good time was had by all. We were treated to the live piano accompaniment of Jeff Rapsis, who is an amazing piano player and silent film buff. Here is a link to his blog.

Students enjoyed seeing what life was like in the 1920s, through the lens of Buster Keaton and others. It was a great cultural experience. Some of the student comments were:

"He played the piano so well, I forgot he was there."

"It is weird that they didn't have street lights and a police man had to tell the people where to go so they didn't crash."

" I liked how they told the story with their bodies and faces."

April Brings Showers of Creativity

We've been super busy here in the various ELP classes this past month. Costume Design has been especially focused, as our play Dragon-Aid, the Flavor With the Fiery Kick performs the weekend of May 14th.

A couple of weeks ago, Magazine, Costume Design, FlipVid and Birding all presented for the School Board and the community. Mackenzie Burnside presented her findings about eggs as well. We've gotten a lot of very positive feedback about the presentations. Thanks Juliet, JT, Liz, Morgan, Cailin, Davi, Molly, Mackenzie, Marina, Isabella, Matt and Carly for coming and representing us so well!

This past week, many eighth graders went to DC as part of a class field trip. Those who stayed at GBS were incredibly productive and helpful to creating the costumes. Quinn Kepner, Triston Spaulding, Storm England, Sean Campell, Becca Goldspring as well as many others really stepped up to help bring everythign together. We are very proud of the giant dragon puppet that is coming together in the IT room with help from Mr. Sweeney. Pictures will soon be following!

Flip Vid Class has several films in production that we hope to screen soon. They include a film about GBS for upcoming 5th graders in the elementary schools, a music video to a rap called Let Learning Happen and a cooking show starring Tasty Ted and Saucy Steve. I can't wait to see the final product!

Magazine has been creating many fabulous articles, although our staffing has been pretty severely impacted by the DC trip, NWEA testing, and field trips. Even with all the spring business, the students continue to do a great job.

Applied Mathematicians have been stretching and growing in a unit on logic puzzles and logical thinking. We've had a great time working together to solve the puzzles.

5th grade mathematicians have also worked on logic puzzles, and are currently learning about coordinate grids, congruency, reflections, translation and other concepts.

Improvers had their first show for Ms. Bundy's class. A good time was had by all. The improv group continues to grow. We've welcomed Kaitlyn and Michael B. as our newest members this month. We're looking forward to perhaps doing a small performance at the June talent show.

Birding is working on bringing Project Nighthawk to GBS. Here's a link.

Lastly, we had a great field trip with the Griffin's Nest to Bowling Acres in Peterborough. We have 62 students involved with the program. We are very excited with how it has helped bridge AES and GBS.

As you can see, ELP is bubbling with a Spring explosion of creativity and work!

Costume Design Field Trip

We took a great field trip to Concord today, where we got lots of supplies for the costumes we've been working on. The costume designers have been doing a lot of planning, sketching and finding of costumes in the last few weeks.

With our latest supplies, we will be able to finish the sewing and creating we have planned.

Pi Day Celebration

5th Grade Mathematicians recently celebrated Pi Day. Pi Day is March 14th ( 3.14) every year....

We celebrated by wearing Pi crowns, cooking and eating apple, chocolate and pizza pie, and of course learning all about how to find the circumference and area of circles. We also found the circumference and area of our heads (pretending, of course that they were perfectly round circles.)

We're proud of Maria for memorizing 27 digits of Pi to win our Pi memorization contest!

In February, the improv group had two special events.

The first one was a visit from Jonathan Farmer, who is an actor, director and writer out of NYC. He taught us about projecting our voices and about pronouncing things clearly.

Hello ELP students and Families,

We've been super busy here at GBS....

If you get a chance, check out The Bobcat's Meow. The student journalists have been creating many fabulous articles about the happenings at the school

The scriptwriters have finished the play. It is called Dragon-Aid : The Flavor with the Fiery Kick. It promises to be a fantastic show!

Costume Design is in full swing, now that the play is finished. We'll have a display of some models of costumes in the main hallway right after vacation. The designers have been creating and thinking very thoughtfully.

5th Grade mathematicians have been learning about graphing and about Pi. We are looking forward to Pi Day in March!

Improv and Public Speaking has been working with new members to continue learning good public speaking skills and to start to prepare for a show in April.

Griffin's Nest boasts 60 total children involved with the program! We are very excited to celebrate the ongoing connections between GBS and AES students.

Our newest class, Flip Vid Movie Making is off to a great start. We hope to have some movies to show you soon. So stay tuned!

Casino Game Requirements for Applied Math

Probability Game

Create a new casino style game based on chance. Your game should be fun, easy to play and profitable! Each turn at the game will cost players 1 ticket to play. If they win, you will have to give them a jackpot based off of the probability of winning. Whomever gets the most tickets will win a fabulous prize!

Requirements:

You will need to provide :

For the players:

* Everything that players will need to play the game. Playing pieces, board, cards, dice, etc.
* A sign with the name of your game, the likelihood of winning, and the # of tickets that can be won.

For Ms. C:

* Clearly written rules.
* A visual that shows how you determined the probability of winning.

Ms C will provide:

time to work on the project in class.

20-30 players

space to show the games.

Of course the game should show effort, have correct spelling, be attractive to look at, etc. You want as many people as possible to play your game! The more players, the more tickets you make!

Griffin's Nest Buddies

The Griffin's Nest is a peer mentoring group that pairs AES students and GBS students. Here are a few pictures of some of our buddies working on decorating pumpkins for the Halloween season.

The Griffin's Nest has been meeting together every week since the start of school.

GBS Griffins also meet on Fridays to learn leadership and social skills to improve their communication with their buddies and everyone!

Quarter One Grades

ELP Quarter One grades are in, as report cards go home this coming week. Please feel free to call, email or visit to talk about any questions you might have about how grades were determined. I love to talk about student work and brainstorm about solutions as needed!

Also, please remember that ELP is for stretching and enriching! It is very exciting having so many ELPers (approximately 80!!) but students' core subjects are what needs to be a primary focus. Several students are taking temporary breaks until the middle of Quarter 2 so that they can focus on getting caught up on work in other classes. Please let me know if you need help with this.

You can come and work during 8th block every day except Tuesdays . I am happy to help you with ELP work or any other work you need to do. Some students have been coming to do silent reading or meet with other ELP students, etc. See you soon!

New Birds at the Feeders

We have been seeing lots of birds at our feeders, although with the time change, we are having to get used to seeing them at new times! The birds don't wait around just because we sleep an hour later!

Lately we have seen a flock of pigeons and we have been learning a lot about pigeon color morphs and behavior. Stay tuned for some fast facts about our feathered friends from some of the birders.

Recently sighted birds include: blue heron ( in the wetlands), tufted titmouse, pigeon, mourning dove, bluejay, finches, crow (on property, but not at feeder) and unidentified woodpeckers.

Costume Design Work

Costume Design class has been an active and creative group. Our designers are currently working on a group project to research a time period and create sketches of the costumes for a short play based on the story of Rumpelstiltskin. Students are researching the 1600 and 1700s. Other students are working with a film noir version of the tale. They are studying the 1940s. Here are some of the ladies in action...

Birding Creates Bird Friendly Space

Here are some of our birders working on a bird friendly space outside of the ELP room. They did a great job. We are already seeing several species of birds at our feeders. Special thanks goes to Find-Us-Farm in Hancock for donating plants for the space.

Please make sure that you use every piece of clothing at least once! Thanks and good luck

1. Look at the post below to see Mark's potential outfits

2. Figure out the probability of him wearing any one combination

3. Eliminate any unacceptable choices ( for example, the white and green shirt, lax tie and striped pants would be too much!)

4. Calculate the new likelihoods of choosing any one (acceptable) outfit.

5. Create a visual of your work. This can be a tree diagram, a chart, etc. The completed visual should show and label all of the acceptable combinations as well as show the likelihood of choosing any one outfit.

6. Be ready to present your work to the class. Anyone who gets a 90% or above can help choose an actual outfit for Mark to wear to work one day. ( and yes, it can be a silly one)
